Unit 1: Words and Parts of Speech

Going to Lhasa!
This unit introduces the six types of words in Classical Tibetan: nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and postpositions. It follows the presentation of these topics found in Chapter 9 of Translating Buddhism from Tibetan. Study that chapter carefully. Then, watch the lecture presentation below, memorize the chapter's vocabulary using Quizlet, practice the unit's exercises below, and use the reading sample below to work on your pronounciation.
Click on the blue bars below to reveal each of the five parts of this unit. When you have completed each part, if you are enrolled in a course with an instructor, go to the My Progress page and let the instructor know you have completed your work; you can also provide feedback to the instructor on how your work is going. If you have a Nettle account, when you leave this site and come back, your progress will have been logged so you can continue where you left off.

Rearrange the following words so that they make the phrase below in correct Tibetan word order. For help, press the Colors button to color words according to their grammatical categories, or the Hint button to show word glosses when hovering over a word.
When you are finished with an example, press Mark. If your answer is correct, then press Next to move on to the next example. If your answer is incorrect, then you may have to repeat the exercise one or more times. Press the Repeat button to do so. Note that this is just to give you more practice; repeat attempts will neither help nor hurt your score. When you have attempted an exercise as many times as allowed, then press Answer to see the answer.
